We’ve written another full guide on the best time to visit Antarctica, but personally we prefer to travel early season (November) for landscapes and penguins, and late season (February and March) for whales. Designed to be the ultimate 6-star experience of a lifetime for only up to 200 guests in Antarctica, enjoy a smooth voyage to the most remarkable and remote polar locations that few will ever visit. One of the most enthralling aspects of Antarctica is the fact that it’s virtually untouched by humans.
DiscoverFREESTYLE CRUISING
You wander down the gangway, strap a harness and rope to you, and literally jump off a perfectly good (and warm) ship into the icy water. For those that are on a super tight schedule or really, really don’t want to cross the Drake, you can fly down to join your cruise to Antarctica. The length of Antarctica cruises vary quite a bit, with options ranging from a week right up to an entire month. Or get in touch with us for the best price possible with our current favourite operator, Quark Expeditions, even better than what they advertise to the public. And if you have some flexibility in your travel plans, there’s a big potential to lock in some remarkable last-minute deals.
Discover Antarctica
Antarctica is home to a hardy community of wonderful wildlife, which has adapted to the cold, windy and icy Antarctic environment. The South Geographic Pole is in Antarctica, and most of the continent lies within the Antarctic Circle, at 66.5 degrees south of the Equator. You’ll experience the distinct cultural offerings of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Punta Arenas and Santiago — and witness the unforgettable beauty of Cape Horn and Antarctica. Diving in Antarctica is a very unique experience where you can see marine mammals, krill and ice, but it does require advanced PADI certification, ice-diving certs and at least 20 logged ice dives. You can see lots of whales too such as humpback whales, minke whales and orca (killer whales), and occasionally blue or southern right whales in the Southern Ocean.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. The trip would not have been the same without the myriad of wildlife seen on South Georgia. The landscapes in Antarctica are beyond amazing; they are serene and humbling. It was a pleasant surprise to see four different species of whales, including killer whales.
South America Cruises
The New Zealand-based Heritage Expeditions is one of the few companies that specializes in voyages to the Ross Sea and the New Zealand Subantarctic Islands. Heritage was founded in 1985 by a family of biologists and the company is still family-run out of its offices in Christchurch. What makes Hurtigruten stand out from other cruise operators is their commitment to sustainable travel. G Expeditions offers a slew of voyages to the White Continent, so there’s an option for everyone. This includes everything from a 13 night classic Antarctic Peninsula trip to a 22 night voyage that ventures to the Falklands and South Georgia before heading to the Antarctic Peninsula. But with so many different tour operators to choose from, finding the best Antarctic cruise for your trip to the White Continent is no easy feat.
Itinerary
I wish to say how grateful we are now for the phone call you made way back last year...you gave us that little push we needed to make up our mind. Swoop service was outstanding and I would highly recommend you anytime. The most important of these being the cruise that was recommended, which was exactly what I was looking for. The Swoop staff were very organized and followed through on everything, ensuring that I knew what and when things needed to be completed. January is the peak of the Antarctic summer, with penguin rookeries heaving with newly hatched chicks and their harried parents. By February, the rapidly growing chicks dominate the rookeries and whale sightings intensify.
South America Cruise Onboard Experience
Here you can find the Argentine base Almirante Brown and the Chilean base Gonzalez Videla, as well as colonies of neighbouring penguins. The cost of an Antarctica cruise largely depends on the departure date, how long the cruise goes for, and the type of cabin you book on the ship but most cruises start from USD$4,500. The Antarctic refers to the region made up of south polar zones that include the seas and some outlying islands.

You’re on a large expedition ship which is designed to handle much worse conditions than the Drake. As the season progresses into February and March, the continent witnesses the awe-inspiring migrations of thousands of humpback whales and penguins shedding their feathers in the molting season. In November, as the continent emerges from its icy slumber, voyagers are greeted with pristine and untouched snowy landscapes. Brown Bluff lies on the coast of the Antarctic Sound at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. As the name suggests, the landscape is dominated by an ominous 745 metre high cliff.

The narrow Errera Channel offers a spectacular passage to and from Cuverville as icebergs become trapped and grounded in the nearby shallows. Watching from the observation decks as our navigators weave the ship carefully between the icebergs is as exciting as being surrounded by the throngs of nesting penguins onshore. Early sealers in the area used Yankee Harbour on Greenwich Island as a frequent base of operations, its remarkable setting providing a natural safe haven for the sailors.
If weather, sea or ice conditions do not allow our planned navigation, our experienced crew will deliver an adapted itinerary. Flexibility and our deep knowledge of the area combine to give you an amazing exploration experience. Our experienced Captain will continually monitor conditions to create the best possible itinerary for your adventure.
